Smaller and far less congested than many other South East Asian cities, Vientiane has been described as how Saigon once was. The city has wide boulevards that make it easy going for visitors. Rental cars are however almost unheard of in Laos, but much of the city center can be easily explored on foot. And while some of the attractions can be a couple of miles apart the walking in Vientiane is typically easy going.

The locals use bicycles for travel and bikes can be easily rented at seemingly unbelievably low prices. The most important thing to remember is that the street signs are not in English and this can make getting around a little tricky. More of the traffic is on bike than car so you don’t have to worry about cars that don’t give bikes the right away. When on a bike you’re likely to always have the right away.

Should you need to travel a bit further out then the city’s public transportation can generally get you to many of the major destinations and there are numerous taxicabs for hire to get you where you need to go. The cabbies do barter for the fare, just be sure to keep this in mind before you begin the trip.
