In many ways the city of Vientiane is only now becoming modernized and this includes links to the outside world. Laos is a landlocked nation and as a result can be difficult to reach. Commercial air travel is limited to this part of the world, and there are no direct flights from North America or Europe. Even travel from Asia is somewhat limited and as a result there are only a few flights in and out of Vientiane each day. Be sure to consider this while traveling as even a minor delay could seriously impact your vacation plans.
The Wattay International Airport is located only about two and a half miles outside of the city of Vientiane, and it is one of a handful of official international airports. The airport has attempted to modernize to meet the demands of travelers and this is apparent with the new international terminal that was built in the last decade. It is adjoined with a smaller domestic terminal that was originally the only terminal building.
Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport is still trying to attract more carriers, but this modern terminal will be able to handle many more flights. It is a small but organized airport, where visitors can find limited amenities, along with customs control, and shuttle bus and taxicabs located in the baggage claims area.
