Notable time periods in the history of Tunis include:
- 2000 B.C. – The town was founded by the people of Libya.
- 900 B.C. – Phoenicians move in from Carthage and claim the town as there own.
- 395 B.C. – Berbers move in and take control of the area but they are quickly overtaken by Agathocles, a local African ruler. He, in turn, quickly leaves and the area is again controlled by the people of Carthage.
- 146 A.D. – Ancient Romans attack Carthage and then proceed to attack Tunis. They completely destroy the city but realize that it is in an excellent location and rebuild it.
- 600’s A.D. – Arab Muslims take control of the area. The medina is built ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction... ).
- 1100 – 1500 A.D. – This is the period of most prosperity throughout the entire history of Tunis.
- 1534 A.D. – Turkey takes control of Tunis. There is some struggle but they continually to primarily rule the area.
- 1881 A.D. – The French move in and control the area.
- 1942 – 1943 A.D. – The area becomes a base for military forces in World War II.
- 1979 – 1990 A.D. – Tunis was the headquarters for the Arab League.
- Today – There is turmoil in the area as a result of conflicts between Lebanon and Israel related to the fact that the PLO was headquartered there at one time.
