If you really want to have fun and get aquainted with Tunisians, take the TLM train from either Tunis or the cruise port and enjoy the ride. But be sure your have small Tunisian money before you start out on your adventure.
Just spend half a day riding up and down the line, getting on and off as one pleases and wander around the towns on the stops without being hassled as a tourist. But, most importantly spend time making friends on the train. The TLM picks up and drops off high school students to the best schools and most are happy to try out their broken English with Americans. Just sitting back and watching is fun. The Tunisians are happy people and laugh a lot. And watching teen-age boys grab on to the outside of the train to hitch a free ride from one stop to another is breath-taking more fun. All is so great and will make any real adventurer fall in love with Tunisians.
