Here are some books might appeal to upcoming Maui visitors. In the meantime, get all the advice you can here at TA.

General Guidebooks:

Driving & Discovering Hawaii: Maui and Molokai - Best photos of ANY book!!  This is the most comprehensive, detailed and lavishly illustrated Maui guidebook. All 330 photos are numbered and indicated on the copious maps so you can stand in the exact place the photographer did. D&DM&M has selected hotel and restaurant recommendations, but Frommer's or Maui Revealed has more listings like this than D&DM&M. Frommer's is more up to date with restaurants as it is comes from a huge New York publishing house with a large budget. Driving & Discovering Maui and Molokai Hawaii's Geatest Driving Adventures Maps make taking a quick tour easy and clearly point out the best stops along the way.

Hana Highway Mile by Mile - Derived from the original Maui Mile by Mile guidebook, this new full color guidebook is an excellent resource for the Road to Hana. The guide is updated yearly, and currently is a 4th edition publication. This book really replaces the need for obtaining the Maui Mile by Mile book since it only omits Haleakala. The larger and better details maps and full color photos make it a much better guide than Maui - Mile by Mile.

Frommer's Maui 2006/2007 - Overall Frommer's is great, but hopefully, they will eventually include more photos. Photos are mostly black and white. You can reach their website here.

Lonely Planet Maui   Lonely Planet excels at comprehensive background information and quirky asides. It is really for those who want to get off the beaten-track, not for those who want the all-inclusive resort vacation. This guide was written by a resident of Maui and contains detailed history, culture, environment, and activities chapters which really help travelers connect to the island. The format of the guide makes it easy to navigate and there are beautiful color photographs to inspire your itineraries. You can reach their website here.

Moon Handbooks Maui: Including Moloka' i and Lana' i " - The nice thing about the Moon guide is that it combines Maui with Moloka' i and Lana' i, which are fun excursions from the island of Maui.

Schmap Maui & Molokai Guide  - The reviews and content included in this free downloadable guide are pretty standard, but the digital maps and user-supplied photographs are truly unique (although you have to click on the photos and link to the Flickr website to see the full resolution versions).  Certainly not a replacement for a good paper guidebook like Frommers, Lonely Planet, Mile by Mile or Maui Revealed, but a great supplement.

For those who eat (*grins*):

50 Thrifty Maui Restaurants - If revealed leads you wrong, these guys won't.  An updated version of this guidebook has just (September 2006) been released.

For hikers:

Lonely Planet's Hiking in Hawaii- A few years old but a really great book dedicated to hikes and trails in Hawaii. Detailed and thorough.

Maui Trailblazer - The best, and most highly ranked guide of it's kind. If you like off the beaten path, you want trailblazer for your trip. You can reach their website here.

Maui Trails:

Walks, Strolls and Treks on the Valley Isle - Lots of text (like Frommer's) but one of the best trial guides you can buy.

For snorkelers:

Lonely Planet's Diving and Snorkeling Hawaii - This book is brand new and is a good supplement to those going to the islands primarily to snorkle or dive.
