Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove

2 of 5 stars

check in was like a 3-ring circus and took almost an hour, thanks to someone who wasnt even a front desk agent. when we went back to change rooms, the manager said to another front desk person "what was ____ doing here??"

the rooms were decent and clean. they were also a nice size. they upgraded us to a corner suite with a wrap-around balcony.

the room service is hit or miss. i loved my breakfast (chocolate chip pancakes) but my boyfriend hated his (french toast). the dinner is also mediocre. the angus burger was delish, but the hummus plate was so disgusting.

we also tried to order food on the 'rooftop' pool. the cabana boy said it would be about 15 minutes. i patiently waited 30 minutes before deciding to cancel my order. when i did cancel, a manager came out making a huge deal out of it. all i wanted was some fried rice! but they took too long and i was over it.

also note: the other reviewers are not exaggerating when they explain nikki beach. i was so uncomfortable and felt unsafe with all walks of life pouring out of that club at night time.

the parking is terrible.

the hotel is in a convenient location to a couple of decent places to eat. there's a pizza place on the same street as the hotel that is soooo good. there is also an american apparel!

tripadvisor is gracious giving this hotel 4-stars. it must just be for the amenities the hotel offers, but they just don't hit it with the service.

“Pleasant place to stay”

Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove

Jun 10, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Sonesta in Coconut Grove for four nights at the end of May. The reservation was booked by a family member for us as we had travelled to Florida for a graduation. Our room had a view of the bay and a fully equipped kitchenette. What a treat to be able to have water and drinks and snacks in the fridge and to make coffee. The king sized bed was supremely comfortable and made up with excellent quality sheets and pillows and down duvet. The bathroom, although small, had an abundance of excellent quality towels and top-of-line toiletries. Two spa-quality robes were in the closet freshly laundered for our use. The room itself was spacious, spotlessly clean, and fresh smelling. On two mornings, we had a great breakfast in the 8th floor restaurant overlooking the bay. Overall, for our purposes, it was a very pleasant place to stay.

“Outstanding View”

Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove

4 of 5 stars
Toronto, Canada
May 26, 2008

Stayed at this hotel one night due to a wedding that was held there, ceremony and reception. I found the property was well-mantained, and the room was very clean, airy and smelled fresh. Found the washroom in the lobby very clean and fresh, which is unusual for most hotels. The view from the room (20th floor) was great. The festivities was held on the eight floor and the reception hall was clean and the views from there were outstanding. The service was very good. My only regret is that I only stayed one night but would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again.

“Look elsewhere”

Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove

May 15, 2008

If you want a nice hotel that takes care of their customers look elsewhere. We booked a 2 bed room suite that was to have a king bed in each room. One room had 2 twin beds pushed together with a lamb strip down the middle which was horrible. The other room's airconditioner did not work the entire stay and we had personal in the room the whole time trying to fix it. They even walked in our room without knocking just came right in. Finally they were going to move us after 2 hours at the front desk but we insisited on seeing the new room first (which they argued about) and sure enough one of the rooms had the same thing two twin beds pushed together. Where do hotels even get twin beds nowdays?? We pretty much spent our entire stay with this room problem. The front desk staff was horrible they would leave us standing there forever and were completely rude!!

“Amazing views, great pool BUT beware of noise”

Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove

May 9, 2008

I'm kind of mixed on this hotel. In general, I would say that it's nice, our room had one of the best views I've ever seen, the staff was friendly and courteous... but there were major problems that would prevent me from staying there in the future. The lobby is hip and nicely designed, but when you get up to the rooms, it has the feel of a glorified Super 8 motel. The hallways smell of air freshener and the decor is, well... if I had to make up a name, it would be "European Gas Station". You know, clean, with lots of in-room convenience, but not tasteful or well designed. The room decor is basic, comfortable, but with no hint of the funky luxury the lobby implies. I was fortunate with the size and view: the corner one bedroom suite had a spectacularly huge balcony overlooking the marina. This room was right over the pool and Panorama restaurant one floor below. I was a little concerned about being this close however the pool bar closes at 7, the pool itself closes at 10 and Panorama at 11, so there was no noise factor coming from these particular facilities late at night. The major issue is the club Nikki Beach on the ground floor of the hotel. The room was on the 9th floor and even with all the windows closed, the air conditioner going full blast and the fan on in the bathroom right next to the bed, I could not sleep from the noise way below, which went on late into the night. Nikki Beach is a restaurant with an outdoor patio and turns into a nightclub after 11 and it's LOUD! Management did not say anything about the possibility of it being noisy, and I fail to see how they get repeat business on any floors lower than 15 due to the noise, at least on that side of the hotel. If you sleep like a rock and like to party, fine, but if you're here for business (on a weekday no less) and trying to get some sleep, forget it. The most prized rooms, the ones with the best views and balconies, are directly above the club. If it's loud 9 floors up, I have no idea how anyone in rooms below got any sleep at all. The Coconut Grove location doesn't seem to fit with the Sobe style party going on downstairs every night.
