Although we knew we would love anywhere we'd stay on Bora Bora, we had done extensive research on the internet (tripadvisor and tahiti-explorer which has a great summarised review of most resorts).
We had hesitated between Sofitel Motu and Intercontinental Thalasso. Our decision was based on snorkelling which was our number one priority. We didn't regret our choice for one second. We haven't seen all other resorts but are convinced that as far as snorkelling is concerned, you will not find better than the Sofitel Motu. In fact a few resort probably have very poor snorkelling considering there is no coral around them.
Once our resort choice made, like many we wished for the best bungalow, with the best view. As a few reviews have said already, ALL bungalows at Sofitel Motu have fantastic view. Only one deluxe OWB (#112 or #113, can't remember) does not have views of Mount Otemanu (but still gorgeous views of Taha). All others do, and all must be just as good as the one we had. So I wouldn't pay the extra money for a deluxe OWB, as they are not more secluded.
Having said that, we had a deluxe OWB, #114 and wouldn't go for any other one, for a specific reason that we ignored until we arrived (we were just lucky). It has the most perfect piece of coral right in font of the sundeck, giving #114 its private aquarium and coral garden. Check our video to see what we mean.
We were pleasantly surprised by the inside of the bungalow. One review I read said Sofitel don't do a very good Marketing job. I totally agree. The place looks way better in real life than on their website.
So concerning bungalow choice, to summarise, don't bother getting a deluxe one, unless you are sure to get #114. Others do have bits of coral here and there, sometimes right under the bungalow (#115 and #116 I think), but the light will not be as good.
If your priority is comfort and luxury, probably go for a newer resort (not saying that Sofitel Motu is not either, but there are definitely newer and more 'flashy' places around).
Our other advices :
- Get up VERY early.
We were up at 5:30am to watch the sunset and take advantage of clear and calm water (by 6:00 we would be swimming and feeding our fishies). Of course it depends on the weather, but you have better chances to enjoy glass-like water eary in the moning.
- Do the lagoonarium tour, not the shark and ray feeding tour.
Only because in the lagoonarium tour, you also do shark and ray feeding and snorkeling in coral garden before actually going to the lagoonarium.
- DO THE HIKING TRIP !
We did on our last day and wished we had done it earlier, and for a longer trip (we did the Valley of the kings 3-hour trip).
The guide, Azdin, is a wonderful guide and amazing person, whose story deserves a book. He will take you through his discoveies and share his knowledge of Polynesian culture and plants. We ate wild mangos, passion fruits, grapefruit and coconut like you have never tried. We saw his proud wild ginger and white vanilla plantations, and were just blown away by his stories, his willingness to share his knowledge, his passion and kindness (thanks Azdin !).
We will be happy to share our experience if you need further info.
