This Ranthambhore "jungle camp" is truly terrific, offering rooms, luxury tents, and cottages. We chose to book a room in the main building, which was the most cost-effective option and also proved to be the most convenient in terms of proximity to the dining area, extra bathrooms (key when both partners are suffering from gastrointestinal distress), etc. My wife corresponded with Usha a great deal leading up to our visit, and she proved to be the most polite and helpful hostess imaginable. She was instrumental in helping us book the essential jeep safaris through Ranthambhore National Park and always responded in such a timely and gracious manner.
Given that we were coming directly from the unbelievable Amarvilas, we expected somewhat of a downgrade in service and amenities. However, this was not at all the case! A staff member received us at the Sawai Madhopur train station, and then upon our arrival at the camp, Usha greeted us with a lovely tika ceremony, and we were offered warm towels, drinks, etc. Although it was very dark when we first arrived, we could see the next morning that the grounds were absolutely lovely---meticulously maintained, with a wealth of flora and fauna. We especially enjoyed the lily pond on site, where we were lucky enough to see a crocodile and many interesting birds. The abundance of wildlife is not surprising given that the camp borders the national park itself. In fact, we were told that a mother tiger and her cubs had been prowling around the camp's walls the previous evening.
The food (all included, as there is not really anywhere to go for dining purposes) was outstanding. Dinners consisted of traditional vegetarian Indian dishes served homestyle, which meant waiters making rounds with all the dishes and accompaniments until we said no more. Although the food and serving style was reminiscent of what one would experience in an Indian home, the cuisine was also ultra gourmet and inventive. Our first dinner featured a white pumpkin curry, which was simply amazing. The spices came together just perfectly with the flavor of the pumpkin (which we had not had the opportunity to eat before). Each night there were multiple bread offerings, and one of the finest was ajwain-infused pooris, which added some nice flavor from the norm. There were so many offerings at each meal. Another great dish was okra with shredded coconut. Breakfast was terrific, too. In addition to a cereal, yogurt, and fruit buffet, they cooked eggs to order. I had an Indian-style omelet with chilis, tomatoes, red onions, and cheese, and it was really good. The food here was among the most memorable of our trip.
The Khem Villas staff also make sure their guests are well prepared for touring the national park, providing blankets, hot water bottles, and refreshments for the journey. It is quite chilly in the morning and at night, and the blankets and hot water bottles were certainly appreciated (my wife also loved that they included a hot water bottle tucked in the bed sheets each night). The staff truly anticipate your every need and go above and beyond.
Although we don't tend to socialize too much with other travelers on our journeys, the nightly bonfire was a nice way to mingle with the other guests and also get advice from the hosts while enjoying drinks and snacks. Although we were not blessed with any tiger sightings (however, we did see an even more rare leopard perched high on a cliff), we enjoyed our safaris immensely and only wish we could have stayed longer so as to increase our chances and also to continue enjoy the lovely grounds and delicious food at Khem Villas.
