My mum and myself are just back from a week long holiday at the Melia Sinai (Aug. 2008) and I am compelled to comment as it was one of the best holidays I have ever experienced with the hotel playing a great part in this. My experience has always been that 5 star hotels outside Europe, c etc. rarely match up to the same quality as perhaps we are used to but at the Melia Sinai most of the aspects truly meet the 5 star standard. This is a long review so I have broken it into sections so you can consider the bits relevant to you. Divers in particular please see the end section!
ROOMS
As the photos of our room show the décor was anything but tired and old fashioned, in fact my parents are currently having a new house built and have taken pictures of the tiles and furnishings to use as inspiration. There was a flat screen HD TV, good sized fridge (left empty so you could stock it up yourself cheaply, although option was available to have it filled by hotel). I will admit however that we were in a new block of the hotel so I couldn’t vouch for the older rooms although everyone we spoke to seemed to think the rooms were all very modern.
We did laugh at the fact that they had a proper heavy duty quilt on the beds in 40 degree temperatures but we simply removed this and used just the quilt cover and the cleaners did not attempt to put it back on. I think all the rooms have some sort of sea view but even looking over the rest of the hotel is stunning. One of my favourite things was to come home each afternoon and find a new towel sculpture on my bed I’ve put photo of one but I don’t want to spoil the surprises for you!
FOOD AND DRINK
The few complaints I have seen about this hotel seem to certain around the food and drink and really I don’t understand this. We went all inclusive and never found the need to eat/drink anywhere else except for during our trip to Cairo.
There is a large buffet restaurant upstairs which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it can be very busy at peak times and feel a bit more like a canteen. My main tip would be to head to the second restaurant downstairs (open for lunch and dinner) which is much quieter and has a more intimate feel. Apparently is classed as Italian food and whilst Pasta is always available it is basically just like upstairs but with a little less choice. However it more than makes up for this by being a much more relaxing experience and is still included in the all inclusive package.
The upstairs restaurant has an outside area and in the morning there are a huge number of small (cute) birds waiting to swoop in for the crumbs. To be honest I found this amusing and rather sweet but I can see why it would bother some people but you can just as easily inside in the air conditioned room to avoid them.
At all meals, in addition to the buffet option, there is a chef making you up fresh dishes to your choice, omelettes and pancakes in the morning, pizza and chicken burgers for lunch and the highly recommended pasta with fresh sauces being cooked to your taste at dinner and lunch. Each night the buffet was around a theme with Oriental, Egyptian and even a world food night which had an amazing Mexican selection as part of it. There was some repetition in the buffet foods but even as a slightly picky eater I could find something different to eat at every meal and the fresh dish being cooked in front of you varied every time.
There are a number of different bars in the hotel and the beach, pool and lounge bar are all covered in the all inclusive. There is another pool bar/restaurant which you have to pay for and a gorgeous shisha tent which is well worth the small charge (£1.20ish) to try the water flavoured tobacco in the water pipe. Like most all inclusive drinks are local spirits and you do get mixers from large bottles rather than individual cans but it’s busy enough that they don’t have time to go flat. I checked with my rep and all the food and ice is prepared with mineral water so feel free to indulge in ice cubes in your drinks. Although glasses of mineral water are free bottle of it are not and so we did have to spend about £1 for a litre of bottled water for the room. We were never ever approached for a tip and although we offered a small tip (the equivalent of 50p) ever night for dinner and ever few times using the bar it was appreciated but don’t think it affected the service we received. The staff were all very friendly and helpful regardless of any tip.
POOLS, BEACH, ENTERTAINMENT
There are about 5 pools in the hotel so you are spoilt for choice. There are 2 infinity pools which are stunning, a shaded pool, the dive training pool and another quieter pool which we tended to use. All have lovely wooden sun loungers with umbrellas, cushions and fresh towel supplied to you every day. The pool boy got to know our preference quickly and soon had our beds ready for us before we arrived each day.
The hotel has it owns beach and you can of course choose to lie on the beach with the same facility of umbrellas and sun beds although you have to enter the sea via the jetty so as to protect your feet and the coral! As the hotel is laid out along the shore it has its own kind of promenade and it was nice in the evening to take a stroll along the front and even as 2 women feel totally secure as you are within the hotel compound. Infact there was only once gentleman worker in the hotel that could be percieved as a bit "sleazy" and it was easy enough to shake him off. Outside the hotel we didnt have any problems in this respect although we were always with a guide.
Entertainment wise there is a nightly all singing all dancing show which is OK but not really my thing. There was also a salsa night in the beach bar which looked fun, karaoke in the lounge, table tennis tournaments etc. There is always something to be taking part in but it is not a particularly lively hotel and you are a bit out of the main resort of Nama Bay (see trips) but if you are looking for chilled out and relaxing its ideal.
As I had no children with me I can’t comment on the kids club but the facilities for it certainly looked good enough. There is a wicked playhouse thing on the beach and trampolines etc.
OTHER FACILITIES
There is a little set of shops on site with a perfumery, jewellers and gift shop. The only time we left the hotel was to go on the trip to Cairo so comparing prices to things we saw there it seemed reasonable enough.
The gym is free to use but after all my diving I was too tired to bother and there is also a spa/beauticians for an additional fee. It was very tempting but was not something me or my Mum took up. I did see that you could get massages in a tent on the beach front which looked lovely!
TRIPS
The hotel organises a mini bus to Nama Bay twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening when you can go and experience the night life and have a busier night than in the hotel. As we were on the all inclusive deal and quite content we chose not to take this option but others seemed to enjoy it.
I felt that I could not go on a trip to Egypt and not have seen the Pyramids and so we forked out for a trip to Cairo by plane. This included a trip to the Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, Egyptian Museum, and Citadel, Papyrus workshop, Perfumery and lunch. It is a long, hot and tiring day but in my opinion well worth it. There is a cheaper option to go by bus but that is 6 hours each way!
ILLNESS
I will admit that I did get sick whilst I was away with a rather annoying and painful stomach bug. However from speaking to other people at other hotels during our trips or at the airport this was being experienced ALL OVER SHARM. My Mum who was staying at the same hotel eating and drinking most of the same foods did not experience it at all. It may be something in the water, drinking or sea, or it may be air borne but it is certainly not a reflection on the hotel itself and although irritating I did not let it ruin my trip. My Mum and I are looking to go back to the same hotel soon!
DIVING
If you are a diver then this hotel is LUXURY! The international Extra Divers are based in the hotel itself with a dive shop, 2 classrooms, training pool, and office and equipment room. At the start of the trip I booked in with the shop, they fitted me for the equipment I needed to hire and then this was mine for the rest of my trip (no messing about every morning trying to find the right BCD) I also got to keep my own equipment in a box and this was loaded onto the dive boat for me in advance of any trips. Even on shore dives they wheeled the equipment right down to the jetty for you so no straining to carry tanks on dry land in very hot temperatures.
I did dive trips to Tiran Island and Ras Mahammed Marine Park (a must do!) but even the house reef that the hotel is spectacular with lots of dive boats coming in daily to dive in this spot. As a Marine Biologist I can confirm that the coral is in good condition and the fish life in abundance. In my one week visit both Manta Rays and Whale Sharks were spotted in the house reef although sadly I missed them both. Even just snorkelling in the reef is a pleasure and I did this often on my non dive days.
Non-diving family members can also attend dive boat trips and this proved to be a great value trip for my Mum who used to be nervous of putting her head in the water and with the help of the boat crew is now an avid snorkeller.
Thanks to a review on here I knew to take a medical certificate out with me stating I was fit to dive. There is a doctor visits to provide this but they are not there everyday (meaning you might miss valuable dive days) and I believe there is a charge. A simple letter from doctor took care of that so thanks trip advisor!
