“Really enjoyed it”

Melia Sinai

4 of 5 stars
andover, england
Nov 12, 2008

My wife, 15 year old stepson and I stayed here for 2 weeks all inclusive in late July. We had read mixed reviews, particularly regarding the star rating, food, and general hygeine.

As far as the star rating is concerned as with most overseas holiday hotels it tends to be overrated but we were well pleased with the facilities and service etc. Our room was clean and comfortable and we also had a sea view, from our balcony. My wife actually saw dolphins leaping one morning. The beds as mentioned by other reviewers are hard but that suited us and we always slept well. Room facilities are fairly basic but, after all, how much time does anyone spend there on holiday?

The food, again as with a lot of AI hotels was fine although it would have been good if there had been an a la carte restaurant as an alternative for a couple of times. The downstairs restaurant was closed so we had a choice of indoors or outside at the upstairs one. Mostly we chose the outdoor option since indoors was too stuffy and noisy. We rarely had to wait more than a few minutes for a table as the staff would quickly clear and rearrange tables to suit. Other reviewers have complained about birds flying around and sampling the food, this only happens if you leave your food unattended and uncovered, common sense or what?

The bar staff were fine, especially at the pool bar where we didn't need to tip all the time to get good service, just be polite and friendly, unlike certain other nationalities!

No problem either with sunbeds by the pool, we occaisionally tipped the pool guys and the always put sunloungers and towels where we wanted them. Anyway, by Sharm standards it's a fairly small hotel and there's always room around the various pools.

Entertainment is pretty basic but we were lucky in that we met lots of like-minded people and would meet up in the evening for a beer and a chat.

We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and they helped to make our stay so enjoyable. We all suffered from the usual egyptian tummy, common to all resorts it seems, but the guy in the perfume shop made us a herbal brew which certainly helped, and at no charged. Naturally he was interested in selling us some perfume, which we later did (worthwhile) but he seemed genuinely to want to help us. Watch out for the guy in the gift shop, he was great fun but his prices varied daily!

The most memorable part of the holiday was the snorkelling, I've no need to elaborate since other reviewers have done so in detail but suffice to say I rate the snorkelling and views of fish from the hotel jetty to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. We also took a half day trip snorkelling to Tiran Island via the hotel dive centre which was inexpensive, and the snorkelling not as good as from the hotel reef but brilliant fun. We went out on a Zodiac inflatable which spent as much time out of the water as in, and stopped a couple of times to snorkel. My wife stayed in the boat while my stepson and I snorkelled so the driver motored over to one of the larger boats and got her a cup of tea! While waiting for us snorkellers to return to the boat she was rewarded with the sight of a large sea turtle swimming by underneath the boat, even the driver was excited.

Overall we had a great time, the hotel is pretty quiet and not close to much in the way of entertainment, but if you want a chill out time in a decent hotel with reasonable facilities and superb snorkelling (thats why so many boats moor off the hotel reef) then try this one.

“unbelievably fantastic”

Melia Sinai

5 of 5 stars
Carlisle, United Kingdom
Nov 11, 2008

Ok, bear with me as it's a long review but it's going to be honest!!
First of all - 1st opinion when we were dropped off was simply "WOW!" - marble reception area, very clean and airy...wonderful. Check in was fine - no problems at all.
We were took up to our room, in the newer part of hotel around the side and were astounded by how big it actually was!! Our room was fantastic - 2 beds (double, side by side), tv, balcony, clean bathroom/toilet, spacious - couldn't have asked for a better room to be honest. View was both of the swimming pool and also the sea which was beautiful!!
Food - I do agree with people in that it got a bit repetitive, however, there was SO much choice that it was easy to try new foods - there is a "pasta corner" where the chef makes you whatever kind of pasta you like with a choice of sauce, vegetables and pasta you wanted, there is also a HUGE salad area, bread area, hot food/cold food etc - delicious though (everything, including salads as it is washed in bottled water not tap water). Breakfast there was, again, cereals, toast, sausage/egg (hard boiled or boiled), omlettes, fruit etc - lovely!!
Every single person who worked in the hotel cannot do enough to please you - they are the most friendliest, kindest, helpful people you will find in a hotel this size. You will find you get looked after by 1 or 2 certain waiters and this will stay like this for the duration of your trip. If you are friendly to them and treat them like friends, not servants, they will go out of their way to look after you. We made friends with the lifeguard at our pool and he took us to see Old Sharm at night and helped banter for us so we got a good price on things and told us good deals etc. Bear in mind they do not get paid a lot so any tip for them and for them to be treatd with respect is excellent.
Our room was in front of the "Saga" pool, (we're 21 & 22 years old) and we loved it - there were no children (apart from a couple of babies who were there in the early morn and evening) or younger people and it was lovely. So quiet and peaceful!!
We went on holiday 1/2 board but changed to All Inclusive 3 days into our trip - which is worth doing as we saved around £1400!! It is a better deal changing over there than doing it before you go though!!
Whilst there, we went go-karting twice at the Ghibli Raceway, which was fantastic - 1st time was just me and my fiance and 2nd time was the "Rammadan Grand Prix" - reasonably priced both times and again, the people are very friendly and eager to help you!!
We also went quad biking in the desert, which was awesome fun!! A taxi picked us up at the hotel and took us to the place, got our quad bikes, went into the desert, where drinks were provided (water £2 - think about them having to bring it all the way into the desert...by that time you need a drink anyway!!) and then back again. We went to se sunset and it was fantastic. At the end of the trip, the taxi takes you back to the hotel again. There is a choice of photo's and DVD's you can buy off them for a reasonable pirce as well.
Old Sharm is beautiful - no other words to describe it. People on the market stalls and in shops will try to get you to go into their shops but a firm "No" is all that is needed, We watched a show in the centre of old sharm where there were dancers, flame eaters, illusionists and thoroughly enjoyed it (I got pulled up on stage!!).
From the Lighthouse, there is a fabulous view of Tiran Island and all the hotels along the coast - it is well worth going up to see (we went up during the day and at night time - he proposed up the top of the lighthouse!!) for the sheer beauty of it all.
Within the hotel is a health spa - here you can get massages, beauty treatments, pedicures etc, go to the gym and also get henna tattoo's. We went for a package deal - jacuzzi, sauna, steam room (with sea salt scrub), coconut wrap and a massage - for both of us it worked out at around £90!! A steal for how refreshed and relaxed you feel afterwards. We even went back for a full body massage a few days later. We also got henna tattoo's (I got 2, he got 1) - which is done at the back of the gymnasium but he is amazing at doing it!!
Unfortunately, we both got bad stomachs but we went to the "in-house" doctor and he gave my fiance an injection and me some tablets and we were fine in literally 2 days!! IMMODIUM OR ANY OTHER DRUG FROM THIS COUNTRY DO NOT WORK!! :)
In the hotel there are a few little shops as well where you can buy perfumes/oils, sun lotion , ornaments/keepsakes etc, batteries, cameras and so on!!
Sorry it's so long, I could write more as we loved it so much we are going back another time for definite!! Please ignore any bad reports you read and trust me - it is fabulous and you will enjoy every minute of your holiday!!

“Poor 5 Star”

Melia Sinai

2 of 5 stars
Berks, UK
Oct 29, 2008

Not great - hotel dinner at the buffet is like a rugby scrum, poor food & nowhere near enough tables. You can end up waiting for 2 hours for a table, unless in the cafeteria like resturant inside. The buffet was the only resturant open in the evenings which is poor for 5*. Problem with our booking & they had not received it so they let us sit around for an hour and would not tell us what the problem was. Finally given a room which was nice. Week into the holiday the management told us the room had not been paid for & they expected us to cover it - i insisted it had already been paid in full by me & refused to pay again. Extremely rude & unhelpful manager Mostafa, had to speak to another manager to rectify the issue but no apology & they didn't even bother telling us it was resolved, we had to chase them. Would not go to this hotel again. Snorkelling great but shame we could not walk or play in sea.

“Great Sorkelling and Good Hotel”

Melia Sinai

4 of 5 stars
Leicester
Oct 26, 2008

We stayed at the Melia Sinai for 12 nights at the end of September on an all inclusive basis which we arranged ourselves over the web.
We chose this hotel because of the comments on Trip Advisor about the house reef and the promise of a good standard of accommodation. We got hooked on snorkelling after spending two weeks last year in Taba staying at the Sofitel in February and the Intercontinental in September.
We had booked a sea front room which we had to wait about one and a half hours for when we arrived at 9 pm because it was not ready which was a bit annoying but the same thing happened at the Intercontinental last year although they up graded our room free of charge and we didn’t have to pay for late check out when we left so we thought that this was usual.
The ground floor room did look very tired and was certainly not 5 star and didn’t come near to the hotels in Taba. The beds were also very hard. However after our initial disappointment we thought the room was fine and didn’t have a bad nights sleep. When we opened the curtains we were about twenty feet from the beach and just a short walk from reception. There are newer rooms in the hotel but probably not along the sea front.
We thought the food and service in the restaurant was excellent and never had a bad meal. The restaurant was very busy on opening and you had to queue for food but there was plenty of it. We usually had a couple of drinks in the bar first and generally went in about 8.30 when it was less crowded although we still sometimes had to wait while the waiters found us a table. Speaking of which the tables are next to one another and there are only a few for couples and these in the main tended to be placed in busy parts of the restaurant. Although to begin with we would have preferred to have eaten by ourselves
It did mean that it was much easier to make friends if the couple you were placed next to spoke English. If you did eat late the choice of food did seem to be less although there was nearly always something nice and hot being cooked on the outside barbecue. I should add there were lots of tables outside but we always ate indoors because of the air con and the downstairs restaurant people write about was not open for the majority of our stay. The food and service were the two things about the hotel that we felt were much better than the hotels we had stayed in last year. No it wasn’t haute cuisine and if we had booked bed and breakfast only we may have been disappointed if we had eaten in the hotel every night but for the price we paid we do not think it could be faulted
For a change you can walk to the Baron Resort along the beach or follow an unmade track. It took us about 15 minutes to walk there along the beach in the dark but may only take 5 or 10 minutes when the track is completed. There is an Indian Restaurant where we had a great curry all be it at very near to English prices and we also had a nice meal at the Italian Restaurant. There were other restaurants and bars there which we did not get to.
We thought the swimming pools at the hotel were small and preferred the beach where it was cooler. We never had a problem getting a sun bed.
The main reason to stay at the hotel I think is for the house reef (although you can walk from the Baron Resort). It was for me the highlight of the holiday. I would spend up to two hours in the sea in the morning and another couple during the day. The coral and fish were superb everyday but some days the number of fish there were was just incredible. These seemed to be the days when the sea was a little choppy and the fish may have come in seeking shelter but even when the sea was relatively calm the fish were unbelievable. I was surprised at the number of people who complained that you couldn’t just walk in to the sea and had to use the pontoon because it is well documented. It is something you have to take into account though because quite a few people would not go in to the sea from the pontoon because the sea was so deep.
I thought the staff at the hotel were very helpful although the service in the lobby bar could have been better.
It was a bit frustrating at the end of the stay when we could not get a late check out because the hotel was too busy. That is fair enough if it applies all the time but we were made to wait when we arrived late in the evening for our room and could not see how this could have arisen as check out is at 12 noon and the rooms should be available from 3pm.
Would recommend the hotel to anyone who likes snorkelling and wants a good value holiday.

“Great for snorkling and very relaxing”

Melia Sinai

3 of 5 stars
Bournemouth
Oct 23, 2008

Our stay at the Melia Sinai got off to a bit of a rocky start, as they didn't have a room ready for us! We did arrive late in the evening and two hours earlier than expected. After a short wait a room was ready. The block we were put in did not seem to be completed and we had to walk through what seemed like a lounge to get to our room. The room had no air conditioning and felt like an oven there was also no hot water even though you wouldn't miss it in the boiling hot room.
The following day we complained to reception and had to wait for hours for them to sort something out. Not a great way to start the holiday.
Eventually we ended up with a great room right by the pool, which was lovely.

I couldn't fault the hotel itself, the food was great and lovely surroundings. The best part was most definitely the snorkelling as the house reef is incredible. If you like snorkelling / diving this is a great place to stay. We snorkelled off many other reefs and found the reef at the hotel to be by far the best.

Some drawbacks are it is far from the main town of Na'am Bay. My husband and me are late 20's / early 30's and like a bit of nightlife, which is completely lacking at the hotel! We ended up taking lots of taxi rides into Na'am Bay - but make sure you don't pay more than £7-8 pounds return, they will try to rip you off. Also you will need to source your own taxi driver as the hotel charge £20 pound return! If you take the hotel shuttle / taxi it takes around 20 -25 minutes to get into town. Our taxi driver go us there in 10 minutes so be prepared for a pretty hair raising drive!

We were B&B which was fine as we ended up going into Na'am Bay most evenings but if you are not AI the drink prices are very expensive and the bar man (pool bar) kept trying to rip us off.

If you want a very relaxing holiday with great snorkelling / diving this is a great place. If you like to be able to walk into town and enjoy some nightlife then I would suggest definitely stay closer to Na'am Bay.

All in all not quite a 5* but a great place for a relaxing holiday.
