We (mother in law, wife and myself) spent a week all inclusive at the Melia Sinai during June 2008. We had arranged for the hotel to collect us by taxi at the airport for €20. Our flight was delayed by three hours, despite this they were there to meet us and were very efficient.
Check in at reception was courteous, fast and efficient. They gave us adjoining rooms at the quiet end of the resort which was like an annex at the side of the complex. We were located on the first floor overlooking a pool and with a sea view. Having read previous reports we would have to agree that the rooms have passed their sell by date, furniture tired and worn. Beds are like stone but room boy supplied foam mattress overlays at our request the next morning which improved the comfort factor! Having said all that, the room soon becomes home and was not a major problem. The T.V in your room receives several English channels such as BBC World and CNN but we had to retune one of the T.V's as it was only receiving a few channels (reception can arrange this for you). Although we didn't tip until the end of the holiday the room boy left clean towels and cleaned the room thoroughly daily, as well as leaving ornate towel sculptures for our enjoyment. Girls take your own hair dryer as the one in the bathroom is hopeless. The room fridge is empty so you can stock up yourself with water and with your own duty free hooch. They do supply two small bottles of water on arrival, from then on you will need to buy your own water for the room (at a cost of 12LE which is £1.20) which we found to be unusual for all inclusive.
The buffet (Lepsis) restaurant has a small indoor section but has a large open air terrace available with beautiful sea views. We used this daily for breakfast (6.30 am to 10.00 am), lunch (12.30 pm to 3.00 pm I think) and dinner (7.00 pm to 10.00 pm) parasol available at breakfast time as sun was strong even at 7.30 am! The indoor section is air conditioned, however some patrons would open the windows at lunch! The quality of food was of a good standard, fresh and varied. There is a separate grill area on the terrace cooking different fresh food daily at each meal time and fresh pasta cooked to order. Having read previous reports regarding the birds (sparrows) we were prepared. However, they did not become a nuisance unless you left your table unattended. Always cover your food with napkin if leaving the table or better still don't leave your food unattended, go in shifts. We noticed that some people did not seem to care if the birds had been at their food! They are sure to be a source of contamination and possible source of people becoming unwell. We had no stomach problems at all, but we did take precautions by using sanatising hand gel and going to eat as soon as the restaurant opened so food was fresh, hot and uncontaminated by other guests (observed another tourist licking fingers and squeezing bread – no wonder some people were ill). We all ate the salads and had ice in drinks without any problems.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful and we didn't tip until the end of the holiday. We didn’t find a problem with the all inclusive drinks although occasionally when using the different bars we did have to ask for an extra shot of spirit which was supplied no problem. There is no shortage of sunbeds and the pool boys are very accommodating with supplying towels and cushions for your sunbed. As others have said the house reef is outstanding for snorkeling and diving. There is no access to the sea from the beach due to the coral. However, there is a floating jetty which stretches over this and helpfully has steps leading into the warm water. We used the hotel spa for a massage and the ladies will enjoy the eyebrow threading which many people recommended although the spa itself was very basic. Some people were affected by mosquito bites although we were not (used anti-mosquito bands for arms and ankles and roll on repellent, both from Aldi). Temperature often in the forties, we never saw a single cloud, just pure blue sky from horizon to horizon. Take plenty of high factor sun screen (very expensive here) and drink plenty of water as dehydration is a real worry in the scorching heat.
The hotel has a shuttle bus which goes into Na'ama Bay twice daily and also Sharm old town three times a week for a nominal charge. You need to book this with reception the day before as seats are limited. Na'ama Bay is worth a single visit for a look around and a couple of drinks (the roof of the camel bar is recommended) but surprisingly forget the shopping, we like to haggle but their bottom prices were ludicrous, a complete waste of time. We found some prices were cheaper at the hotel (for postcards and stamps) also at the small shopping mall at the Baron Resort nearby (clothing and souvenirs). Also, there is a supermarket (expensive, but soft drinks cheaper than at The Melia) and a chemist here if you require one. If you decide to go to the Baron Resort just follow the beach to the left, go pass the new Melia Sharm Hotel still under construction (never heard any noise), carry on passing the Coral Beach Hotel (make a note of the many stairs going uphill and be happy that you are not staying here) and you come to the Baron Resort (looks to be a nice resort), the shops are at the far end (you cannot miss it as it is signposted several times). It is a 15 to 20 minute walk.
Overall we were pleased with our selection of the Melia Sinai and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to family and friends. Some people we talked to were disappointed with the location of the hotel and its limited entertainment, they clearly had not researched their choice of hotel before coming. If it is the night life of Na’ama that you require then choose a hotel nearer to Na’ama Bay as taxi will be expensive from here. If you don’t go all inclusive then it will be very expensive with little alternative places to go for food and drink. The Melia Sinai is situated in a quiet part of Sharm just 15 minutes from the airport (no aircraft noise at all), don't expect dancing till dawn or loads to do for teenagers and children. However, it is ideal for those who want to snorkel at a prime site and to have a quiet relaxing get away from it all type of holiday, a real chill, and one that we really enjoyed.
