Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

I stayed in the hotel for 2 days as a business traveller. My room was a Junior Seaview suite. My feelings with regard to this place is mixed.

The location is "alright" but not really within walking distance to the cool shopping areas, and the coastal view is a bit gloomy. Its not really something for a holiday sort of stay. For business use, it was excellent location wise - very close to the financial district, yet still luxurious. Fairly quiet "corner" of the city.

Optically, the building is pretty hideous (as is much of Singapore from this time period). Inside its obvious that it has been upgraded (a lot) inside - recently. The lobby, elevators and restaurants were definatly of 5 star grade. The front desk service and lobby staff, also. (classic asian style service, tons and tons of employees).

The rooms themselves were not really to my liking. I mean, lets keep it real here - the room price of a suite - is under 500 euro - so compared to europe or attractive parts of the US, it's not exactly expensive. But... The bathrooms had dated style marble - which was not very nice, the ligthing was generally poor (which is never a good sign), the windows / sliding doors were of original vintage, which detracted from the luxury feel.

The AC was sort of weird, if you put it on 20c, it was meatlocker cold, anything above 20c (incl. 20.5) equaled 35c++ and very high humidity. Weird.

The carpet was nice, but never "felt" clean. The amenities were plentiful. The minibar and TV was very 1990's. Generally the room just didn't feel "crisp" in any way. Scrapes and stuff all over the place. The closets stank like they had been closed for 15 years. Also, the shower had nice long black hairs in it, not so nice. ;(

Cleaning (besides from the hairs) was mediocre.

So... I guess... Not horrible, not great. Personally, I wouldnt go there again.

Oh, the Mortons steakhouse at the hotel was as good as the ones in the states. Very very nice.

“Impeccable Service”

Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

Aug 20, 2008

We got an Executive Club room and requested a high floor. This was accommodated as we were on the 18th floor. When we got dropped off at the hotel, it was buzzing with people...at least 7 people were jostling into position to open car doors, check us in, welcome / greet us, open front hotel door, call the elevator, etc. I think over the 2.5 days there we were welcomed at least 100 times! The people are really warm and friendly and we can say was some of the best overall service that we have received. After a while it may seem a bit over the top but still nice!

With the Executive Club room, you get access to the Executive Lounge on the 19th floor. Views are to the 'back' and not out the 'front' towards the marina or city skyline. That said, the food, snacks, drinks and comfort settings / furniture are very good. You can also use free wireless internet access up there...in case you don't know, the whole city of Singapore is wireless and anyone can register and access free internet, even tourists. I would also recommend paying the extra $20 or so to get a harbour / city skyline Executive Club Room looking over the 'front' rather than the 'back'. We made the mistake of not doing this.

Pros
- service, politeness of staff
- quality of fittings and furnishings
- cleanliness
- food

Cons
- S$105 for a 1-way Merc E-Class ride to airport not worth the value (big S-Class Merc is S$155)
- shopping mall attached to hotel is very average
- Morton's Steak House not open for lunch

On a side note, we did the Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo and would recommend this for a good time.

To wrap up, we'll be back!

“Excellent Hotel”

A really world class hotel. I stayed in a club harbour view room. Im my opinion it is well worth the extra to stay on the club floor. You receive champagne(moet) breakfast, afternoon tea, internet access and evening cocktails included in the price and the very nice atmosphere of the club lounge on the 19th floor.
You can also benefit from in room check in and check out away from the crowd in the club.
The room was very comfortable and benefited from a great view.
As an aside I left a coupe of personal items in the room after we had checked out. They were delivered to me airside at Changi before departing. Impressive service.

“Five star experience.”

We stayed five nights and six days and booked a harbour room through their Internet. We also booked airport pick up, used their concierge, exchanged money, checked out their gym, ate at their restaurant and used room service and dry cleaning/laundry.
1. Airport pick up: the driver was on time holding a paper printed with the guest's name outside the baggage area. We got the exact car that we wanted and it had two cold bottles of water and cold towels ready.
2. Check in: we were greeted right after we got out of the car and escorted to the room. Tea and fresh fruit was waiting. Our room was on the 20th floor with harborview. Luggage arrived quickly.
3. Room: floor to ceiling windows, extra amenities like emergency flashlight, umbrella, two robes, two slippers, complimentary bottled water daily, Molton brown toiletries, bath salts in tub, loofa scrub, some office supplies (staples, hilighter) room, night light. High tech lighting controls as well as privacy indicator. There was an indirect view from the bathroom due to the glass wall. Two toilet paper racks in bathroom, three phones (one in bathroom) a tub and a shower
and one sink.
3. Concierge: excellent service and we used them to book a few
tours (malacca was a good one but tiring, raffles tiffin, night safari
riverboat, flyer). Money exchange was a breeze with them
4. Dryclean: they found a button missing and insisted on paying for
it. Price is high but expected. They returned our clothes the same day despite dropping it off at lunch. Laundry was neatly folded in a basket with a flower on top. Clothes were in plastic (not wires)
hangers in the closet.
5. Room service: brought a table with food kept in a warmer. Arrived
in 20 minutes and picked in five. Great selection of Indian,American
local cuisine.
6. Location: across from the esplanade, attached to marina mall,
walking distance to merlion, singapore river but we used cabs to go everywhere which was cheap. It was too hot to walk.
7. Food at The melt. Get the breakfast rate or it could be pretty
pricey. We came in 10 min before closing and they extended the
closing time.
8. Gym with cold towels water and techno equipment. Overlooking
pool Spotless.
9.Customer service was their strongest asset. Always with a smile
and anticipated our every need. No worries was their motto.
Concierge walked you out after calling a cab. Housekeeping was
excellent with attention to details. Change in throwpillows during
turndown Amazing. Everyone knew our names.
Minor quirks (which might just be me): wifi is not free,(30 sgd/day
or 20/12 hrs 15/ 6 hrs etc ) it is free if you booked the club lounge. My pet peeve was that the hair dryer was attached. With that view I would have loved to move around. No flat screen tv but with surround speakers.

Overall the best experience we've had in Singapore due to both the
view and customer service We have tried the ritz and the four
seasons (comparable customer service) but mo has both. We would
definitely return.
Suggest: try Singapore flyer, night safari, riverboat 30 min trip, malacca
only if you have time, sentosa cable car, images museum, chili crab with
man toux bread (east coast seafood).

“Always the best...”

Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

Our second stay at MO, Sing in as many years. They have never let us down. We booked a City Suite through Amex and were upgraded to a Harbour View Suite. Spent 7 nights there.

The staff could not be nicer... right from the Bellboys to the Room Service folks.

We were travelling with my 2yr old daughter. She was virtually adopted by the folks working at Melt - the fabulous breakfast restaurant.

We did a lot of room service for my daughter - dinner time - and they would make us off-the-menu items. We used their excellent baby sitting services too - hotel staff.

Due to the National Day Parade it was a bit noisy with all the practicing going on but we didn't mind. At their rehersal my daughter got to enjoy the spectacle from our balcony - including some nice fireworks.

This is a fabulous hotel - don't think twice about booking to stay here.
