“Decent Hotel; Location Not Great”

Island Pacific Hotel

3 of 5 stars

This hotel is all-together okay. The rooms are simple and small yet clean and well kept. The staff is friendly; not all of them speak english but those who don't are quick to point out someone who does. The business center is tidy and very handy. The best thing about the hotel are the views. You'll have spactacular views of the harbor and Victoria's Peak if you're fortunate to stay in a room which faces these sites. However, the biggest drawback of the hotel is the location. It's located in a slum-like area which was a big shock to my senses having just arrived from the West. Outside, it smelled really bad - like something between seafood, ramen noodles and vomit. It's also a bit of a hike to the sites. I didn't stay long enough to figure out public transportation but the closest subway station was a decent walk away. If I had to do it all over, I would have stayed closer to central Hong Kong. Although the hotel was fine for my needs, it wasn't so great as to make up for its location.

“Great hotel in a traditional part of town”

Island Pacific Hotel

We stayed here for two weeks and thought it was great. It was excellent value because it was a little out of the centre of town. However, with travel as cheap and convenient as it is in Hong Kong, this was no problem. Service was excellent at all times and staff couldn't do enough to help. The room was quite a good size compared with some I have stayed in before, particularly in London, and we had a corner room with two great views. As an extra bonus you get to stay in a more traditional area of the island and see a little of more old fashioned HK life. Some people have commented on the dried seafood shops there - and their smell. We didn't find that the shops smelt much (in spite of temperatures up to 34 degrees and over 90% humidity - phew!) and they were much more interesting than the plethora of department stores and chain stores in the centre. Our only criticism was that our room wasn’t ready when we arrived, even though we arrived mid afternoon from a long haul flight and were hot and exhausted. However, this did not mar the stay, and overall this was a great hotel serving good food and excellent value, particularly recommended if you are staying a little longer in HK.

The tramline goes right outside the hotel and across the whole of HK island very frequently, through Central, Wan Chai … for only HK$2 (13p). Get on at the back and go upstairs for a top view, then get off at the front when you want to and drop HK$2 in the box or scan your Octopus card (recommended). For cabs, pick up a hotel card from the shelf by the concierge to show taxi drivers when you want to get back to the hotel - most don't speak English. Taxis to Central cost around HK$25 (£1.75).

“Exceptional place, but far from things”

Island Pacific Hotel

Sep 21, 2008

I had a really great experience at this hotel. The room and bathroom were both very clean and modern. The waitstaff and concierge were very helpful and spoke english very well. The view from our room of hong kong harbor was incredible from the 16th floor.

Two bad items about this hotel is that the business center is a bit expensive so find somewhere else to use the internet. The hotel is also about three blocks from the nearest subway station, making getting around difficult. There were a couple good pastry places up the road from this hotel, though, so we did have breakfast covered.

Apart from the location, everything else makes this a great hotel.

“Nice hotel, Good value for money”

Island Pacific Hotel

Sep 18, 2008

We have just spent 5 days staying in this hotel in Hong Kong. We booked it through a travel website and got a really great deal - about 45 euro a night.

Hotel is a 3* plus and it lives up to this. The facilities are nice and the rooms are comfortable. The hotel is currently undergoing renovations which made a bit of noise but didnt disturb us too much. I've rated the hotel as excellent which really reflects the price - excellent value for money (given the expensive price of hotels on Hong Kong island).

The hotel has a pool which is lovely - was a welcome retreat from the madness of Hong Kong!

The only thing Id really fault is the location. Although on Hong Kong island, the hotel is a good 10 to 15 minute walk from the Metro station, which is a bit annoying. However, taxis are cheap and easy enough to come by. I think the location is reflected in the price and it does offer exceptionally good value on Hong Kong island.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Avoid the hotel shuttle to the airport - get a taxi to Hong Kong station and take the Airport Express. Much quicker.

“Loved the friendly staff....”

Island Pacific Hotel

4 of 5 stars
London
Sep 6, 2008

Booked through BA hotline travel cause i got a good rate!
I was hesitating about the area and the true is that is quite away of all the fun, bar, restaurants and shops!
Its in a local market area in western Hong Kong district....So location wise is not central at all...the only shops around it are local dry fish stores...so you get the strong fishy smell!
The hotel is modern and clean...no smells whatsover as soon as you enter...the staff are friendly and make you feel welcomed!
The only problem we had was sleeping on those really hard matresses so If you dont like hard matresses or have any back problem issues though DONT book it!
They tried to help us by making the beds more soft by adding extra matresses on top...didn't make a big difference...they even offered to upgrade us for free on an executive floor room.
I have to admit that they did whatever they could to assist...and they even let us keep the room and have a very late check out at 8pm for free.
The rooms are quite small but clean and most of them with harbour views. If you want views on a standard rate room ask for rooms on a higher floor ( 20th to the 25th and rooms for example 2001-2008) as they are at the front overlooking the harbour and the city!
We used taxis a lot to go everywhere as its quite cheap and outside was so hot and so humid...for example to go to Causeway Bay which is at the other side of Hong Hong and the furthest you will need to go ,where is a major shopping area we paid around 35 to 40 HK dollars and it only takes 10 minutes depending on the traffic.
The best way to go to the hotel from the airport is to take the Airport express train to Hong Kong, it takes 25 minutes and from Hong Kong station just get a tax,its less than 5-10min ride around 30 to 40 HK dollars including your luggage cost to the hotel!
For me the only negative was the location!!
So overall if you like downtown action in your feet dont book it!!
