My new husband and I stayed at the Lebua just a few days ago for 3 nights and it was fantastic. We had a river view suite and we signed the waiver to open the balcony doors and it was fabulous. We overlooked the river and the room was large and beautiful.
Check-in was fantastic - we were picked up at the airport quickly and effeciently and whisked up to our room where the check-in occurred by a friendly concierge woman. The 1 issue we had is that they told us that the mini bar was complimentary to us and I verified this and said "everything?" and she said yes. But we came to know that alcohol and chocolate were charged to us, we didn't want to fight with them about it as it was only about $15 CAD but really, it was the principal of it that annoyed me.
They gave us a lovely Happy Honeymoon cake, I received a HUGE bouquet of flowers as I got out of the BMW 7 series car and we had champagne, 2 glasses, 2 plates and roses waiting in our room. Amazing.
The room was spacious and the living room proved useful when I was blow drying my hair and my husband wanted to watch and actually hear the TV while he drank a beer and waited patiently. The bathroom was faultless and the housekeeping was perfect.
The staff at the Lebua were very friendly, almost too friendly as some people have mentioned but really, who can fault them on being too nice? It was just more than we were expecting but all in all, it was better than feeling ignored.
The breakfast buffet was to die for. We ate like piglets every morning after we worked out in their gym. The gym and change rooms were wonderful and the pool was nice, not large but nice enough. The breakfast buffet changed up every morning with a few staples left on their menu so some days we loved it more than others but all in all, it was amazing.
We booked a dinner at Sirocco for our last night and once we got up there, it started to rain so we were whisked inside and told that we would wait out the storm. It did stop raining within 20-30 mins or so but when we looked at the menu and the insane prices, we decided to go elsewhere. We do love nice dinners and do not mind paying $$ for good food but these prices were insane and the menu didn't actually appeal to us much.
So we had a drink while we waited and then asked the concierge for a dinner recommendation. They suggested Thanying Restaurant which is about a 10-15 min walk if you go right out the mall doors. Ask the concierge for a card and follow the map. It's on a side street that seemed a bit sketchy but once we got there, the ambience was lovely and the prices were much better than Sirocco and it was lovely Thai food.
After our Thai dinner we headed back up to Sky Bar which is beside Sirocco and we had some free drinks, with our vouchers from the hotel. The view was the best in the city and there was a jazz band playing while we drank and I grabbed my husband to dance.
We did not try the other restaurants in the hotel but if you ask the concierge, they'll give you some great recommendations. We did eat at a nice place in Patong - can't remember the name off hand but it was at the end of 1 of the side streets on the right hand side - it has a lovely wood ambience and great food.
A general note about tuk tuks - definitely negotiate a price with them and be willing to walk away as they can likely bring their price down if they think they'll lose you. And once they have you, they will try to take you to their "Sponsors" which are businesses that sell various items - souvenirs, suits, jewellery... they get free gas or money for every person they drop off, and we didn't mind helping our guy out, we went in for 10 mins and didn't buy anything but they'll try to keep taking you around and around to various places without actually taking you to where you want to go. Just be firm with them, we actually had to get a little mad and tell them that we had to catch a plane and HAD to go back to our hotel. He finally got the jist.
The sky train and ferries are near the Lebua and I think that Lebua is 1 of the best hotels for location alone, and the hotel itself is fantastic. The sky train is effecient and clean and we felt safe on it even at night coming home from Patong.
All in all our stay was amazing and we have actually booked 1 more night before we head back to Toronto on our last night in Thailand. The staff actually asked us if we wanted to have the same suite and we said that would be lovely if possible, so we'll see what we get.
You won't regret staying at the Lebua, we loved it.
